Yes, I'm building a DALEK called DARIK, and yes, it is a proper full sized operator mechanised one like you see on the telly.
The dalek I am building is a 2nd Movie Dalek; like the one whose picture is to the left (you'll also see it in the background picture - is the dalek to the left). This site is a 'progress' update on where I am at with the build. And, if you are not sure what a 2nd Movie Dalek is, read about the Dalek Movie and check out the trailer. Scroll the page to see more..
This is one of my favourite films; great dalek scenes such as the patrol of the Daleks trying to catch people; the doors on the spaceship and the different voices of the Dalek - the guys in charge have deeper voices!
I needed a hell of a lot of strange bits and bobs. All of this is detailed in the dalek manual available from ProjectDalek so I wont be going into details on what’s required (that’s for you to find out!).
I needed to get special aid from people who have a hell of a lot more cutting equipment. Check them out below
My partner and crew continuously asking and badgering me concerning progress and firing out ‘when its going to be finished’ questions.
At the point of writing this, its been 7 years in the making to get to a point where the dalek is taking shape. This is down to life getting in the way and not being able to focus time into it, but yes its going to be built, and I am going to record it all in this site! So, to those reading this and wondering, hey, should I build such a thing – I would say ‘YES’ – BUT. Make sure you have patience – building this is not a ‘today I am going to build this part of the dalek’ and expect it to be done and dusted that day. Make sure you have support – you will need help even if you are the most coolest ultra fandab at carpentry (which I am not!). Make sure you have space – the dalek is a lot bigger than you think; you need space to build it, store it and all the bits that go with it.
So, how on earth did I start? Where do I look? The very best place is the Project Dalek website. On that site is the manual (which you must buy - without the manual you will get stuck), and the plans for the type of dalek that you wish to build, and a fantastic forum of expert dalek builders.
Of course, my dalek has a name. That name is DARIK. Why? because it sounds cool (and easy to spell).
Records of Darik the Dalek build is through the menu options at the top of this page. Each section is a 'record' of the build of that section and comments throughout :) Also, if you want to see what Darik looks like right now, go to the Darik Now page.
