Skirt

The body of the dalek below the shoulder is called the skirt. This skirt sits on the base, and the skirt has the half-balls (hemispheres) on it. A lot of work here, and a huge lot of that beyond my pitiful skills at carpentry. The skirt looks simple according to the plans, but I dont have the kit or the skills to do the panels. This section is definately going to be a laff and a haff!

Skirt frame first. Step in the illustrious Freek to cut out the panels to build out the skirt frame. First, sort out the bottom and top of the skirt - this is a larger than the skirt size on the plan by a little bit - want to be able to fit in the dalek for a start, and want darik to be a big supreme movie dalek!

The top and bottom boards need chamfering to get the correct angles before attaching the boards making up the skirt

Finally, Panel 11 goes into place. Next to clean it up, cut out the holes bottom and top, mark positions of the hemispheres

Cut out and sand down the tops and bottoms of the skirt frame to produce the holes. Place on the base. The result is astonishing!

Next stages will be to complete the base markup. Then, the skirt will get major filling, priming, priming, and more priming - nearly time to start of on the hemispheres!!! Note that this picture was taken before the mechanisation took place since that chassis had to be reshaped to fit the base. Check out the mech section for more details. So below is me seeing how to the two key sections fit together!

The skirt would not be complete without the hemispheres. There's over 50 of these. For each of the circles on the skirt, a hemisphere needs to be placed. A lot of work here having to make sure the hemispheres would not only fit but would stay on after fitted!

Once the hemisphere location are marked off, off to get the skirt and the dome sprayed black. Thanks Tom for a great job - needed tons of undercoat and black gloss spray

Back to the hemispheres, because they would have to be undercoated and then sprayed gloss gold and laquered...

Whilst the skirt was sprayed, I took some time out to refit the shoulders to fit the skirt top. The below picture is when the skirt was sprayed. the hemispheres attached and the shoulders put in place with the gun, claw including the rubber base... Looking good there Darik!!!

For the rubber base, final touch includes apply some leds to the underside.... Following that cleanup on the fixings...
